Three Wheeled Buggies
Whether you're looking for a buggy run around in or a compact stroller for neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies provide great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre, even in tight spaces.
If you're looking for a smooth ride on your baby, select models with 360deg front wheels with swivel. 3 wheel pushchair are susceptible, however to punctures. Be prepared with a repair set.
Frame made of sturdy material
New data show that three-wheeled buggies, the emblem of the noughties, which had more money than common sense, are in steep decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more versatile and easy to drive and look stylish.
The rule is that the bigger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to deal with bumpy and rough pavements. With larger wheels front and back makes it much easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and 3 year old and found it coped well with cobbles, grass rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath wrote "it feels sturdy to push and very solid when going over difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require occasional pumping) offer built-in suspension, which was very comfortable for my kids.
The size and shape of the seat is a further factor to consider. You want the seat to be large enough to allow your child to be comfortable and allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of reclining completely, while others only allow for an adult facing one.
A great choice for tackling off-road or muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. This buggy is suitable for a single child as early as birth and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers up to age 4 and includes a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and a spacious cushioned seat. The storage options are good as well, with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood, and an attractive pouch at the back of the seat unit.
Wheels with a greater diameter
Larger wheels will give your buggy more stability when driving on rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for buggies that are off-road. They also help you maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have rotating front wheels that help you navigate around corners with ease, whereas others are designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to improve the speed and stability at which they can be pushed. This is also helpful in the event that you hit an unintentional tree root or kerb as the front wheel can be lifted up a bit to prevent you from hitting it.
Many 3 wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres which allow them to navigate a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. They are more prone to punctures, so you'll require repair kits and an spare inner tube on hand.
Some of our favourite 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to effortlessly climb and descend kerbs. The buggies also have a suspension that according to Kath "smooths out bumps very effectively".
Buggies with larger wheels can be quite wide, and they may be a challenge to fit into narrow spaces. This is a problem when you're using it for a jogger or you need to be able to get through doors that are narrow when out and out and about. Fortunately, many models come with small folding options that let you remove the front wheels for more compact storage.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheeled buggy is more comfortable to drive with a child. The way they are built ensures that the front wheels spin at a quick pace and are really maneuverable, making them ideal for difficult terrain such as parks, cobbles and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her infant and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the terrain with the swivel rear wheel being particularly helpful. I was also awed by the way it handled the kerbs, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. It was very stable for descending or on a rough terrain."
The only downside to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of a 3 wheel buggy might make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you should keep in mind when your home is a city. If this is the case then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better option for you.
Bumper bar
Bumper bars will protect your child from bumps and scrapes when they are out and about. They are simple and quick to put in and will make your child feel secure and safe whilst out on the town or tackling tough terrain.
Created to match the sleek lines of your Slim Twin stroller, this bumper bar features a soft and cushioned surface that offers a comfortable spot for your child to hang to when walking. The sturdy construction and durable design ensures that your child will enjoy a stroll without fearing of falling out of the buggy or leaning too far ahead.
The sling's fabric is placed within the frame, not on top like the modular seat. This provides a lower centre of gravity for your newborn at the right height and also offers an excellent weight distribution, making it easier to pop over curbs (it is much easier to push a stroller up and down than you think). MFM reviewer Kath discovered that it was able to cope well with grass and cobbles and is a great option for jogging thanks to its lockable swivel wheel on the front and air filled tyres.

This bumper bar is sure to turn heads wherever it is used. It has a sophisticated and elegant look. Available in a range of finishes and colours, it can be customized to suit your personal style. It comes with a simple quick-release mechanism that makes it easy to install and remove the bumper bar when needed. Furthermore, the bumper bar is easy to clean and is constructed from durable materials that are easy to clean. This makes it a great option for families looking for an elegant and safe accessory for their stroller.
Comfort
A 3-wheel buggy provides the best in agility and performance when driving off-road. With perfect geometry and engineering, as well as weight distribution this type of buggy can turn on a dime and be easy to steer with one hand; and all Mountain Buggies meet the same rigorous stability standards and tests as buggies with 4 wheels.
With a fabric sling seat positioned snugly inside the frame instead of over it like modular seats, the Sport's smart design permits it to have a lower center of gravity at the right height for your child, giving you a more comfortable push, a lighter curb pop (you do not require the same amount of weight or effort to lift the hood of your buggy up and over a curb) and a better stability and balance. With the 16" rear wheels, the lockable front wheel, and tyres that are air-filled which allow for a smoother, more comfortable jog.
As the only all-terrain pushchair in our collection to come with a seat for parents that can also be used as the form of a car seat or carrycot to ensure the future of your family and enjoy every adventure from day dot and for years to come and all within the footprint of one buggy!
Kath who was our MFM reviewer, also loved the spaciousness of the buggy. There's a large, easily accessible basket that's huge for such a small buggy as well as an excellent zip-up pouch at the back of the seat unit, and even 2 smaller mesh pockets inside the hood for your phone and keys.
